Carrboro NC can be characterized as a small, historic town consisting mostly of residential areas, but with distinctive retail stores, restaurants and arts activities. Although visitors may be unaware of the precise boundary dividing it from Chapel Hill, throughout its history, Carrboro has maintained its own identity. Among a number of community spirited features, Carrboro has one of the most extensive bikeway systems in the state and, in 2002, earned its 18th consecutive Tree City USA award from the National Arbor Day Foundation for its effort to plant and maintain trees.

The history of Carrboro dates to 1882, when a spur from the Durham-Greensboro Southern Railway line was extended to link university students with the outside world. Several significant historic structures in town remain standing today. The Carrboro Historic District includes a former textile mill, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was renovated as a charming shopping mall, and the former railroad depot was redeveloped for office and retail space. Both contribute significantly to the vitality of the downtown business district, which serves a population of about 18,000.
